HOW I WORK
the conversation
First
we talk. We discuss the architectural project,
the client’s assumptions about the desired artwork, and the client’s
time and budget constraints. Issues that steer my recommendations for
shaping the artwork are:
- visual. How will the designed space be used? What
sorts of people will frequent it? What is the story, the atmosphere
we are trying to capture with the artwork? How does the client see
the project in the mind’s eye?
- use of the artwork. Paintings to persuade a city’s
philanthropic leaders to fund a world class cultural venue might differ from
those presented to a neighborhood zoning advisory board. Uses as different
as those drive our visual choices —the image’s point of view,
atmosphere, level of detail.
- the information the client has on hand. Most of my clients
now can give me computer-generated models to work from, and we select views
from those models. I also work from loose, hand-drawn sketches, photographs,
or from my own perspectives drawn from plans and elevations.
